About the book
Cultural differences frequently lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and miscommunication. Professionals in many fields encounter people with cultural backgrounds and baggage different from their own. They become particularly aware of their own culture when they encounter people whose cultural behaviors and rules differ from their own.
When it comes to professionals working in judicial settings – criminal or civil – a complication is that contact with fellow citizens is often involuntary. These citizens, whether or not through their own actions, face interference from professionals contacted by or on behalf of the government, who carry out interventions that profoundly impact their personal lives. This places them in a dependent position. This creates ample room for miscommunication, resulting from factors such as time pressure, misunderstandings, prejudices, or ethnic profiling.
In Intercultural work in a compulsory context expert authors work on various topics, such as:
- What is culture and how does it influence interactions between people?
- Which values and norms play a role and how can they be discussed?
- What influence do culture and language have on the diagnosis and assessment of mental or psychiatric disorders?
- What influence do cultural differences have on risk assessment, treatment and guidance of offenders?
- What are important prejudices that hinder effective communication between professionals and fellow citizens from 'other' cultures?
