Zeeburg Amsterdam district

Needs survey for art and culture among residents of Indische Buurt in Amsterdam

commissioned by Zeeburg District, Amsterdam

The district wanted to gain insight into the expectations and needs of residents regarding art and culture in the broadest sense: visual arts, theatre, music, film, dance, new media, for adults, young people and children. The Indische Buurt research area is home to groups that are poorly reached by cultural facilities.

The research focused on the following questions: Are the residents aware of the cultural offerings in the neighborhood? Where do they get their information from? What range of art and culture in the neighborhood do residents take advantage of? What wishes, needs and initiatives regarding art and culture are there?

At five meetings with interactive scenes, held at schools and community centers, reached 150 respondents, mainly of Moroccan and Turkish origin. Many residents of the Indische Buurt appeared to be strongly focused on the provision of culture and well-being at neighborhood level.
