Royal Military Police Schiphol

Intercultural conflict management

three-day in-company training for the Royal Military Police Schiphol

This training has been carried out by Jaffar Consultancy for groups of Marechaussees at Schiphol to the great satisfaction of the participants more than eighty times over the course of several years. Marechaussees were trained in three days in dealing with stress, aggression and psychological confusion of citizens in situations on the road, at the airport and at the border. The emphasis was on general principles of intercultural communication: respect for the other and attention to non-verbal communication.

In order to interact with officials at airports and embassies, the military police learned new ways of making contact, focusing on the role of power in communication and politeness strategies.

Intensive training took place for 2 half days with an actor, to give the participants the opportunity to practice their new skills in a realistic practical situation.

From the evaluation forms:

  • 'I found this course very pleasant and will look at people differently in the future. More about thinking about why people react in a certain way.”
  • 'In these three days I learned quite a bit about different cultures and that not everyone reacts the same.'
  • 'It has become clear that a lot of unpleasant situations can be prevented/resolved through good verbal and non-verbal communication.'
